Energy-efficient windows, explained without the marketing

Two numbers on a sticker decide how your windows perform. Once you know what they mean, you can compare any two quotes in about a minute.

U-Factor — how much heat escapes

Lower is better. It measures how readily heat passes through the whole assembly, frame included. It matters most on cold nights and in the Inland Empire’s winter swings.

SHGC — how much sun gets in

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, also lower-is-cooler. In Southern California this is usually the number that decides whether a west-facing room is usable at 4pm in August.

Contemporary home lit at dusk through large replacement windows

Both numbers are printed on the NFRC label attached to every window we install. If a competitor cannot show you theirs for the exact unit they are quoting, you are being sold a claim rather than a product.

California Title 24

Compliance is not optional — and it protects you

Title 24 sets minimum energy performance for windows and doors in California. It is why the permit and inspection process exists, and it is the reason a compliant installation is worth more when you sell.

  • Every unit we install meets Title 24
  • Tested by AAMA and NFRC, ENERGY STAR approved and rated
  • Meets or exceeds ENERGY STAR in all climate zones — coastal, inland and desert
  • Eligible for state and federal energy tax credits
  • We pull the permit and manage the inspection
CoastalSalt air and marine layer — corrosion-resistant hardware and a moderate SHGC to keep light without the heat.
InlandLong, hot summers — low SHGC on west and south elevations does the heavy lifting on the AC bill.
Desert / Las VegasExtreme heat gain and UV — frames that will not warp and the most aggressive glass package we build.

What you will actually feel

Energy savings are real, but they arrive slowly — a lower bill each month rather than a dramatic moment. What homeowners notice in week one is comfort:

  • The hot room becomes usable. The west-facing bedroom or office that was unbearable after 2pm evens out with the rest of the house.
  • The AC cycles off. When the envelope stops leaking, the system stops running continuously against the sun.
  • The house gets quieter. Properly sealed dual-pane glass takes the edge off traffic, aircraft and yard equipment.
  • No more drafts or condensation. Fog between the panes means a failed seal — a symptom, not a cleaning problem.
  • Furniture and floors stop fading. Low-E coatings filter a large share of the UV that bleaches hardwood and upholstery.

Actual savings depend on your existing windows, orientation, insulation, HVAC and how you use the house — which is why we will not print a dollar figure we cannot stand behind.

FAQ

Energy & compliance questions

Our windows and doors are engineered to meet or exceed ENERGY STAR standards in all climate zones and meet California Title 24. That makes them eligible for state and federal energy tax credits and for most utility rebate programs. We give you the NFRC labels and documentation you need to file — confirm current credit amounts with your tax preparer, since the programs change.

Yes. Every window is tested by AAMA and NFRC and is ENERGY STAR approved and rated. Every unit ships with its NFRC label showing U-factor and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient so you can verify exactly what you bought.

In most Southern California cities, yes — window and door replacement is a permitted job, and egress and safety-glazing rules apply to bedrooms, bathrooms and anything near a door or floor. We handle the permitting process as part of the project so it is inspected and legal.
